The campaigners stressed that Mursi was freely elected, with one supporter telling reporters: “Democracy means that the one who’s elected is the one who rules.”
Another pro-Mursi demonstrator explained: “They ( the opposition) say it isn’t a military coup, but it is still a coup – a liberal, secular one against the Egyptian revolution.”
Mursi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, was elected president in 2012 after the revolution that overthrew Hosni Mubarak the previous year.
U.S. President Barack Obama has urged Egypt’s leader to respond to the mass opposition he faces by engaging with the demonstrators. The White House says Obama advised Mursi during a phone call that the political crisis could only be resolved through talks.
