The industrial action highlights the problems faced by the government, which brought in stringent spending cuts and tax hikes after the country’s international bailout in 2011.
Unemployed woman Catarina Viera explained why she would be taking part, saying: “It’s to call for a new government, because the current one is basically death – the final blow for youth and the country.”
Despite the government’s low approval ratings, the centre-right coalition has a comfortable majority in parliament.
State-owned airline TAP has warned of possible disruption, but not cancelled any flights.
Analysts expect the strike to be peaceful and they anticipate little participation from the private sector.
